Thanks for the post and for the question, Michael! There are many changes I’d like to see, which I cover in the last chapter of the book. Here are three big ones:
1. Reframe immigration as a positive for our country by removing the Department of Homeland Security as the main agency in charge. Make another agency focused on economic growth and social prosperity primarily responsible. Like an entirely new department of immigration, or the department of Commerce, Labor, or Agriculture.
2. Increase the number and variety of legal pathways for immigration. This will better meet our economic, family, and humanitarian needs. And it will reduce illegal or irregular immigration.
3. Update the system more frequently by building in automatic renewal metrics. The last time we updated our laws was 1990. Before that it was 1965. And before that it was 1924. This kind of rigidity makes our system become quickly outdated, and leads to the anger and debate we have all the time.
astute observation of your nation... appears to be a well informed page ... keep up the good work
Zeke, are there any specific changes to the legal immigration system that you'd like to see implemented?
